Michael B Jordan and Jamie Foxx give good performances in what is otherwise a fairly standard Oscar bait drama. It’s one of those films that does have powerful moments and it’s power overall depends on how many of these types of injustice dramas you have seen but I spent most of the running time thinking about all the things the film reminded me of that dramatise similar themes much more effectively. These included When They See Us (the current gold standard for this type of drama) Mindhunter (please let there be a third season) and The Hate U Give among others. You might get something out of this if you’re a sucker for this kind of drama but other than being on Barack Obama’s list of favourite film of 2019 I don’t think the film will live long in the memory.
